The Bascom: Center for the Visual Arts

Nestled in the scenic mountain town of Highlands, North Carolina, The Bascom: A Center for the Visual Arts stands as a vibrant hub for creativity, community, and cultural enrichment. With a rich history and a commitment to fostering artistic expression, The Bascom offers an inspiring destination for art enthusiasts and visitors alike.

A Legacy of Artistic Vision

The Bascom's origins trace back to 1983 when artist Watson Barratt envisioned a permanent gallery in Highlands to showcase regional art. This vision materialized as the Bascom-Louise Gallery, initially housed in a single room within the Hudson Library. In 2009, The Bascom expanded to its current six-acre campus, transforming a former horse farm into a dynamic center for the visual arts.
