Keeping Cool in Cashiers

With temperatures between 10 to 20 degrees cooler than nearby cities, it is no wonder this hidden gem in western North Carolina is a favorite summer retreat!

Summertime temperatures in Cashiers runs 10 to 20 degrees cooler than surrounding cities.

It's summer and travelers throughout the southeast are flocking to the western North Carolina mountains seeking refuge from the sweltering summer sun.

For nearly a century travelers have been coming to the Cashiers / Highlands Plateau from the Carolinas coasts and from the "Sunshine State" of Florida.

With no major interstates within an hour, generations of travelers have gotten the word out of a place where average day time temperatures are between 10 to as much as 20 degrees cooler than their home town.

Everyone knows that for months of the year, it gets as hot as Georgia asphalt.  We frequently come up to Cashiers from the northern suburbs of Atlanta.  And not unlike the car spotting game, "Slug Bug" we have come to play a new game where we see who can most accurately predict what the temperature will be at spots along our drive from Clayton, Sky Valley, Highlands and finally, Cashiers, based on the car thermometer.

This past week it was 93 humid degrees in Alpharetta / Johns Creek. As we reached Sky Valley along Dillard Road the windows came down in order to enjoy the crisp mountain air.  By the time we reached Cashiers, it was 73 degrees. That was the exact temperature I had predicted. Although, for a little while, it was touch and go as to whether I had precisely predicted the temperature since Highlands at 4,100 foot elevation, the temperature read 72 degrees. The difference in elevation was the one degree difference for the WIN!

In reality, everyone who comes here is a winner when it comes to escaping the dog days of summer!  Here is more information on what you can expect keeping cool in Cashiers.
