Discover the Hidden Thrill of Cashiers Sliding Rock: Nature's Water Slide Adventure

Updated: 1 day ago

Imagine a warm summer day. You’re surrounded by lush greenery in the heart of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Suddenly, you spot Cashiers Sliding Rock, a hidden gem that draws countless visitors.

From our High Ridge Haven vacation rental property, we can hear childrens' laughter from our deck and porch. Sliding Rock is less than a mile as the crow flies.  From our Cattail Cottage vacation rental property, Sliding Rock is less than five (5) miles away.

Let’s explore what makes this adventure so special!

What is Cashiers Sliding Rock?

Cashiers Sliding Rock is a unique rock formation that allows for a thrilling ride as water cascades down its smooth surface. The experience is a delightful fusion of nature’s beauty and exhilarating fun. With the rock creating a slide effect, the combination of gravity and flowing water makes it a top destination for families and adventure seekers.

Located just a short drive from Cashiers, NC, the rock leads you straight into a refreshing pool of water. In the summer months, water temperatures can reach around 75°F, making it the perfect way to cool off when temperatures soar.

Its source is the Chattooga River and its formation has been thousands of years in the making. The smoothed granite sliding portion is around ten feet in height to the bottom.  There are also pothole structures that have been formed due to the action of swirling water in the river channel. These potholes are deceptively deep as you can see in the video below.

Getting There

From the crossroads in Cashiers, travel south on NC Hwy 107 for 1.9 miles. Turn right going west on Whiteside Cove Road. Continue for 2.8 miles. After crossing bridge, pull off onto dirt on right. Follow trail to right for 100 yards to Cashiers Sliding Rock. Swimming holes are above and below waterfall.

The journey to Cashiers Sliding Rock is part of the excitement. Positioned along Highway 107, the site is easy to reach. While traveling through the scenic landscapes, you’ll take in the beauty of towering trees and winding mountain roads. As you approach, the sense of adventure intensifies.

Upon arrival, you will find designated parking, but be sure to get there early, especially during peak summer months. On busy days, such as weekends in June and July, the site can draw up to 150 visitors. Arriving early helps you avoid long waits and ensures you can enjoy sliding down without feeling rushed.

What to Expect When You Visit

As you step onto the sliding rock, the first thing you’ll notice is the stunning scenery. Surrounded by tall trees and the sound of rushing water, the environment is serene yet invigorating.

The rock’s surface is smooth and ideal for sliding, creating a refreshing splash as you hit the water below. It’s advisable to watch others before trying it yourself; observing allows you to gauge how best to enjoy the ride while prioritizing safety.

Tips for Sliding Success

Wear the Right Gear

Swimwear is essential for comfort and safety. Water shoes can also protect your feet from any sharp rocks and provide better grip as you slide down.

Check the Weather

Be aware of the weather forecast before heading out. Heavy rain in the area can impact water flow and make sliding less safe.

Observe Proper Etiquette

Keep the sliding zone clear and wait for your turn. This ensures everyone enjoys their time and helps avoid accidents.

Safety First

Try sitting on the edge of the rock before fully committing to the slide. This allows you to feel comfortable with the experience.

Bring a Towel and Change of Clothes

After a fun day, you’ll likely want to dry off and change before heading home. A towel and dry clothes can make your departure more comfortable.

One day in fall, we called Sliding Rock our own and one of my son's braved the fall weather (and cooler water temperature).

How deep of potholes?  Our son is nearly 6' 4" tall.  Watch him disappear.
